My new indulgence

Now, you all know that I’ve been a die-never Firefly fan for a good number of years. But I must admit, I have a new love in the sci-fi TV department: KILLJOYS

To impart what a big deal this is, you’re talking to a person *points to self* who works ridiculous hours and doesn’t spend much time indulging in TV. So, that means it’s got to be worth my time.

Now, about this show — It’s got some similar elements to my old love, Firefly, but not so much that it’s a duplicate or even close to a copy of that beloved show. Yes, it has a strong female lead, fighters who are good with both hands and guns, and well-placed funny moments, but I believe that’s where the similarities end.

Let’s talk about the characters a bit, shall we?

The HBIC: Dutch

Hannah John-Kamen plays Dutch. She is the only Killjoy I’ve “met” whose bounty hunter (aka Reclamation Agent) license has no last name on it. She’s simply “Dutch”. The woman is kick-ass, literally. She’s beautiful, well spoken, has a firm grasp on things that others don’t expect her to, such as the nuances of politics. She’s loyal to her team, vulnerable in her own way, yet she has a shell of steel over her heart that makes you want to care for her even as you watch her take down three men that outweigh her by a good forty pounds each. Oh, and I totally want her purple leather jacket — I can’t help it! Her outfits and gear are to die for!

Dutch – Level 5 RAC Agent and all-around badass

The blurb on the Syfy site sums this character up pretty well. “A gorgeous, complicated and deadly flirt, Dutch is bold and fun loving on the surface. She has a unique gift for earning people’s trust and respect regardless of their class. But under her banter and protective flirtations, there is pain, maturity, and a deep solemnity. As close friends as she is with John when we first meet them, she has always withheld a part of herself, a history of which she is deeply ashamed…” ~~ Killjoys: Dutch on the Syfy Channel

As for books of mine, if I were to pair Dutch up with anyone, it would be Scharsi from the book, “Hide No More”. They are almost two peas in a pod — their histories are less than wonderful, their growing up years were full of heartache and pain, they both wield weapons like nobody’s business, and they are loyal to those they love. I think they would have been good friends.

Next time, we’ll talk about more awesome characters of @Killjoys:
~ Pree played by Thom Allison @thomallison
~ Fancy Lee played by Sean Baek @SeanBaekTO
~ Alivis Akari played by Morgan Kelly @Morgansam

Killjoys is telecast on the SyFy and Science channels. They’re currently filming for Season 2. After the Season 1 finale, this author can’t wait to see what they come up with next.

“I run a successful security firm, basically a bodyguard to some of the escorts that cater to the high-rolling vamps in our society.”

“Whores?”

Jovon’s gaze rolled toward the ceiling. Why were vamps, the most sexual beings on earth, so narrow-minded in this area? She sighed, and then spoke slowly as if teaching a kindergartner. “No sex happens. That’s why I’m there. Basically, the escorts cater to men and women who haven’t had or made time for relationships but enjoy companionship. Besides, why show up at a high-dollar charity event alone when you can take runway-model material instead?”

“So here you are, a fashion doll’s muscle, headed into the investigation from hell. And single. I wonder…”

“Wonder what?”

“If you can handle it, Jovon.”

“Handle what? The mission?”

“Handle me.” He licked his lips as he watched her closely. “If you let me, I’ll rock your world.”

Gently stroking her jaw, he said, “And you still haven’t answered my question, Jovon. You don’t understand…what?”

She looked up at him. The mix of emotion that shone in her bright hazel eyes floored him. Her words even more so.

“I want you, Reis. And I don’t even know if I like you.” She chuckled, no heat behind the words. “Just not what I expected. Ever.”

“Well, if it makes you feel any better, I don’t like you either,” he whispered as he sealed both their fates with a kiss that shattered her carefully cultivated calm.

His deep moan echoed her own the second she parted the seam of her lips to let him in. Reis was sweet cherry pie and cream followed by scalding-hot spice. And a woman was entitled to her dessert every now and then.

He tasted of mint and jasmine tea. And the way he moved his mouth over hers was confident, without hesitation and downright delicious. He dipped strong fingers into the hollows on either side of her spine, massaging her back as he pulled her closer. Soon she was wrapped up in him, literally, reveling in the strength that encompassed her.

God, she could lose herself in his kiss, his taste, his body…until his words actually sank into her desire-fogged and fairly overloaded brain.

She pushed him back using all her vampire strength. This time he barely moved.

“What do you mean you don’t like me?”

He threw his hands up and took a step back. Oh, he looked so adorably disgruntled. “What? What’d I say?”

“What did you say? Are you serious?”

He paused a moment and seemed to think it over. “How is it any different from what you just said?”

“I said I didn’t know if I liked you. I was still making up my mind. You, however, seem to have already come to a conclusion.”

“Really? Really, Jovon?” He looked as if she’d just crawled out of a crashed alien spacecraft and he wasn’t sure what to make of her. Well, she wasn’t sure what to make of herself either. For some reason, her hormones had shot out of control and landed beyond her reach totally on the wrong side of pissed-off. And she had no idea why.

Yep, the day was definitely catching up with her.

Well, whatever.

She snatched a clean towel off the rack, dabbed at the sweat on her brow and then stomped out of the room.

Without looking back, she snapped, “Good fucking night.”

She’d never know how she managed to bite back the smile brought on by Reis’s growl as it filled the air behind her. As she headed to her room, she shook her head at herself and considered how she’d gone from sinking into his kiss to taking his head off at the neck, and all at the speed of light.

PMS? Bonding? Maybe they were one in the same.

“Goddamn it, Trefor,” she yelled when the idiot jumped out at her from somewhere to the right of the path she’d been traveling. He knew she had a diving appointment today and must have come out to head her off after she’d told him to kiss her ass earlier at the breakfast table.

“This seems to be the only way I can get you alone, Reya,” he said cockily with a too-confident smile.

“Look, how many times do I have to tell you? I don’t want to be alone with you. Not now. Not ever. Not for any reason. Now go away!”

Turning her back on him, she took two steps before his meaty hand landed on her shoulder and spun her around. That hand moved down to her biceps and squeezed brutally. Her shifter senses might be muted in her human form, but they weren’t non-existent. If he didn’t watch it, she’d have to give him a jaguar ass whipping and see how he liked that. Idiot.

“You’re interested in that black-haired giant staying at your place, aren’t you?” he snarled into her face. “Everyone is talking about the two of you!”

Lou walked into the elegant dining room and was immediately directed by one of the staff to a chair across from Jason and Neesia. Neither sat at the head of the table, but side-by-side instead. Lou couldn’t blame them—the view was spectacular, given they faced a wall of screened glass with an unimpeded view of the setting sun on the vast horizon.

The table was set with elegant silver-lined china, dainty tea cups and crystal wine glasses. Lou appreciated Neesia’s attention to detail when he noticed the sturdy glass beer mugs among the delicate stuff. The second he sat down, Lou’s mouth watered. Neesia Pryde appeared to be quite the chef. The smells wafting from the uncovered dishes were absolutely delicious and set his stomach to rumbling. It was pretty impressive considering the woman had managed to whip up many of his favorites with no warning of his visit at all.

And then Niah was there. The huge, white pine table sat eight with room for more, and his woman had waltzed in and sat her pretty self clear at the other end. God, she seemed practically a world away.

Patience, Lou. Patience.

Turning his attention back to the table, Lou wasn’t sure what made his stomach grumble more—the huge spread in front of him, or the scent of that lotion stuff Niah used on her skin that made him think of sundaes—warm, sweet syrup poured over something fruity…with a cherry on top.

Neesia started the dinner off by passing the first dish around. When Lou was done piling his plate, his inner country boy shouted a big yeehaw. He had a pile of hot water cornbread, mustard greens doused in what tasted like homemade spicy chow-chow, and a mountain of macaroni and cheese—and the stuff was made with real cheese instead of that orange, plasticky stuff. He lifted his fork and then paused a moment when the staff brought in yet more food.

This time, his inner-lion lifted its head and took notice—buffalo. Huge pieces of rare, perfectly cut buffalo steak that had been grilled just long enough to add a hint of smoky flavor to the meat. Lou turned towards a smug Jason. “Really?”

Jason simply grinned, and leaned in to kiss his smiling mate. “Yep, that’s how we roll, isn’t it honey?”

“Damn right.”

As a shifter of one of the predator species, his body required huge amounts of protein to stay healthy, and this was a close to heaven as a carnivore could get. He didn’t care that all eyes were on him as he dove headlong into the grub. There was very little Lou loved more than good, southern cooking…other than Niah in his arms, of course.

There was very little talking during the meal as they all stuffed their faces. Lou was glad to see none of the women did that dainty shit where they just pushed the food around on their plates. No, these were lions dressed in designer jeans—beautiful killing machines who took their food seriously.

When the dishes were cleared, cold beer was poured and set in front of Lou along with a baked dessert—bread pudding with raisins and pecans. Mmm, one of his all-time favorites. He took a bite and moaned his appreciation.

That’s when the grilling began…only this time it wasn’t a buffalo on the barbeque feeling the heat this time.

Niah squealed like a little girl when she caught a tuna, even though it was only big enough to throw back into the ocean. Luckily, Lou snagged a Mahi Mahi that could feed a small army and she looked forward to enjoying it for dinner. If they’d been in their pelts they could have devoured it on the spot. Then again, the thought of maneuvering around all those little bones gave her pause. There was a reason why lions preferred big game.

They were almost back to the bungalow when Lou slipped his arms around her waist from behind and gave her something she couldn’t resist—a challenge.

“We’re almost home. Race you to the dock?”

“Tempting. What do I get when I win?” she asked with a cocky grin.

“You win, I’ll rub you down with some of that coconut stuff in that toiletry bag your sisters sent with you. What do I get when you lose?” he asked, sly intent written all over his face.

“Lose?” she scoffed. “I won’t lose.”

“Really? You sure about that, darlin’?”

“I’m so sure I’ll win that you can spank my ass purple if I don’t.”

She bit back a belly laugh at the way his eyes lit up and his brows flew upward on his face. And then he was moving at top speed, stripping off his shorts as he went. Bare-assed naked, Lou stood at the readyin more ways than one.

“Can you swim with that cock of yours weighing you down?”

Snippet Saturday – A woman to love

Blog-Header-option2
Today’s theme makes me think of the movie, Something’s Gotta Give, with Jack Nicholson and Diane Keeton. Remember that part where he says, “Erica, you are a woman to love.” And when she gets home she thinks back on his words and says to herself, “What does that even mean?”

Today it means that our hero has just gotten a good first glimpse at our leading lady. Enjoy a snippet from the upcoming release of Niah’s Pride, a Pryde Ranch novella. Lou sat on the steps that led up to the huge wrap-around porch of the main house on Pryde Ranch and waited. It was a beautiful structure, more of a mansion-sized rustic lodge than a house. He’d left enough clues as to his whereabouts that he was sure it wouldn’t be long now before Neesia, or someone, showed up. Of course she’d want to know what he was doing here, and how the hell he’d gotten onto the estate without passing through any of the heavily monitored gates.

Of course he couldn’t tell her he’d hacked the estate’s security network remotely, found the connect keys for all the hubs and routers, broke into one of the system password files and reset the cycle time on the motion sensors on a far-off fence. With that done, he’d walked right through the temporarily unprotected entrance in a rarely used corner of the vast property.

While scouting the place he’d often wondered why Neesia and her sister, Kotara, needed such tight security. The vast acreage the estate sat on should have been enough of a deterrent for any bad guy, yet he’d had to squeeze through a tight web of electronic controls. It hadn’t been easy.

She was going to kill him. The thought brought a grin. God, he couldn’t wait.

The land in the immediate vicinity was cleared of anything that could hide an intruder, so if he could see from here out to the rolling hills, then he could also be seen.

And here they come. There was no sound other than the whip of wind through the trees, but he knew he was being closed in on like so much fresh meat. No surprise. In fact, it’s exactly what he would have done if he were in her shoes.

A voice caught her attention. It was a prime making his way around the room. He was a marvelous block of a man with a wild and strange energy about him. Even in her wiped-out, tired-to-the-bone state her brain still managed to pick him out of the bristling crowd.

The ropey muscle of his forearm was revealed by a three-quarter-sleeved silk mock turtleneck. Jovon’s gaze was pinned on that arm, watching the long, scarred fingers extend. She wondered what he did for a living that caused him to get scars like that, considering it was highly unusual for their kind to sustain any kind of lasting injury unless it was quite serious.

And look at that skin, she thought. Pale as fresh milk, yet it still held a warmth that made her want to dip her cookie in it.

Girlfriend, that’s just nasty. What’s wrong with you?

Snippet Saturday – A Little Tenderness…heh

This week’s Snippet Saturday theme is a bit deceptive. At first glance I thought, “Awwww, this is going to be a mushy post!” But after taking a closer look, the theme is actually *wait for it…* MAKING OUT!

But the challenge is finding a make-out scene that stops short of HAWT sex. Hmmmm… I’ve got an idea! How about a scene where the hero is making out with the heroine, but it’s all in her head. Literally.

When he dipped his head, she instinctively eased away, then wished her sense of propriety had stayed home.

“What’s wrong?” Kenoe whispered.

“We’re in public,” Shinju hissed through clenched teeth.

“What does that have to do with anything?”

“It’s just that, well, we don’t touch or neck in public. It’s a cultural thing.” She felt the features of her face morph into something between mortified and hungry. Must be because she really wanted to let her tongue take the same path across his mouth his had only seconds ago. God, she could have kicked herself for falling back on old behavior.

While her African-American grandmother encouraged Shinju to live her life as she chose, her grandma on her father’s side had always frowned on Shinju’s independent nature. The woman insisted on teaching her and her cousins proper public etiquette. Unfortunately those childhood lessons, which included a huge dose of “good girls don’t”, seemed to stick just now.

“And if we were visiting your relatives in the States, would there be any issues with PDA?” he asked, sweeping her back into the crowd. The bodies were thick on this particular patch of dance floor.

“PDA? You mean public displays of affection? Of course not. But it’s just not done here.” Which was one of the reasons Shinju always looked forward to her yearly summer trips to visit her stateside cousins. Once her feet hit the city streets of Atlanta, all bets were off. She didn’t sleep around, but she certainly did her share of ass shaking in the clubs, along with the occasional kiss or two from whatever beau her cousins set her up with for the duration of the trip. As a result she’d gathered quite a few pen pals over the years.

In fact she was due to meet up with her kin in a couple of weeks. Strangely enough, the expected thrill of a bit of freedom from the strictures of Japanese life didn’t appeal. It meant leaving Kenoe behind.

“So it’s a Japanese thing?” he asked, leaning in close. God, he smelled good. Like musk, hot sex and dangerous man.

“Duh.” She sniffed, batting playfully at the hands trying to pinch her ass.

“Fine, as long as it’s not an ‘I-really-don’t-want-to-be-seen-with-Kenoe’ thing.”

“Oh don’t get your boxers in a twist. It’s nothing personal.”

“We’ll see. Later.”

“Oh yeah? What’s going to happen later?”

“Well, my beautiful Shinju, I love that you’re a lady when on the street.” He lightly ran a single finger down her cheek, leaving a path in the sweat. It sent a shiver clear to her baby toes. “But I want a freak in my bed.”

“And who says I’ll end up in your bed?”
